So which wines would you take to a desert island, and why?

So I am kicking back here, enjoying Thierry Violot-Guillemard’s remarkable 2004 “Les Rugiens” which I opened (actually more excavated, but that is a story for another time) on a whim last night and reflecting that life throws up some remarkable surprises from time to time. Not the least of which include unique and special wines.

And someone (someone who should know) has just been sharing on twitter their dislike of Mouton-Rothschild and I have been defending the estate, albeit that I myself don’t rate it as highly as some of its peers, but then I have been very very very fortunate to have tasted the 1982 vintage. And on three separate occasions to boot.

Ed Smith, ex Kent, ex Middlesex captain, ex English test player, has written a cure little book called “Luck: What It Means and Why It Matters” and nowhere is that more pertinent thatn in the wine world. Also today, I fleetingly caught up with Martin Crowe, another one time test player (and one of the greatest batsmen New Zealand has ever produced) who I haven’t seen for a couple of years. Crowe has had his fill of good and bad luck, not sure whether he remembered me and whether he thought the encounter fortunate or no, but he is also an enthusiast for unique wine experiences.

So what luck, special, or unique wine experiences have you had?

Most of my great drops have been lucky moments. 1991 Cros Parentoux, 1982 Sori Tilden. An amazing, old, very old in fact, 1976 Matawhero Gewurz that someone had forgotten on the wine rack. All of these (and other wines) have a story, a moment, a person, or something else that made their consumption something special.
